Ancient city with a modern flavour hosts new-style practice group days

Exploration and interaction is on the menu for members taking part in the practice group days in the German city of Cologne from 12 to 15 May.

And Eurojuris board member Stefan Daubner, who leads on events for the network, is looking forward to welcoming members to his country and sharing the exciting programme that has been lined up.

Said Stefan: “We are looking forward to welcoming members to experience the unique atmosphere of authentic Cologne, a very old city in the heart of Europe.  It’s a very friendly and informal place, so it is well suited to the style of this year’s practice group days, which is all about getting out and about, rather than just sitting in a conference room.

“We want to encourage exploration, interaction and exchange of ideas.  We see a real opportunity for the practice groups to evolve from solely knowledge groups to something more, providing market opportunities for members.”

This approach is reflected in the busy programme of events which will encourage members to walk and talk around the city, which is known as a major cultural centre for the Rhineland, with more than 30 museums and hundreds of galleries, as well as its annual carnival celebrations.  There will also be the chance to take part in the usual inter-group football game, although this year there will be a surprise alternative for those who have different skills.

“We chose Cologne because of its central location in Europe and hope members will also find it interesting to learn more about Germany itself,” added Stefan. “There are new economic opportunities as we are undergoing much change at the moment, with a new government and the push for energy independence through renewable sources.”

The destination was identified and a revised programme organised in less than a month, after the difficult decision to relocate this year’s event from Tallinn in Estonia. The network’s visit to the Baltic city was postponed following the invasion of Ukraine, and it’s hoped that the Estonian firm Njord Law will be able to host an event in future years. Christian Bock, president of Eurojuris Germany, said: “We deeply deplore the circumstances that have led to the relocation of this year’s practice groups days. We are, however, happy to provide an attractive alternative and present our famous metropolis on the Rhine as the new venue. Cologne is Germany’s media capital and will offer a variety of interesting opportunities for our practice groups to explore.”
And Cologne lawyer Philip Lüghausen, who is part of member firm BHO Legal, added: "The city of Cologne has a very special and warm atmosphere about it. A metropolis in small-town-size, Cologne has open arms for all people and cultures, be it for a temporary or a permanent stay. Our law firm BHO Legal, located in the heart of this melting pot, is excited to welcome our Eurojuris colleagues and friends to the Practice Groups Days in our beloved home town."
